The pink fairy armadillo (Chlamyphorus truncatus) is one of the world’s most enigmatic and least studied armadillo species, endemic to the arid regions of Argentina. Because of its nocturnal and subterranean habits, as well as its elusive nature, understanding its biology and conservation status has always been a major challenge.
To overcome this difficulty, we have introduced an innovative tool: the use of trained scent dogs to detect the presence of the pink fairy armadillo through its scent. The dog, carefully selected and trained by experts from Scent Imprint Conservation Dogs, will work alongside our field research team, significantly increasing the possibility of recording this unique species without disturbing it.

This project, which is partially supported by FIAA (Foundation for International Aid to Animals), not only opens new opportunities for scientific research and conservation of the pink fairy armadillo, but also showcases the importance of combining local knowledge, innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration to protect the most vulnerable wildlife.
