Scent dog detection of kissing bugs
Chagas disease, caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi and transmitted by kissing bugs, is a disease endemic to Argentina and a pressing public health challenge in our region. Understanding its dynamics in nature is essential for advancing prevention and control.
In this project, which is partially funded by FIAA (Foundation for International Aid to Animals), we are using a scent dog specially trained by the experts at Scent Imprint Conservation Dogs to locate kissing bugs in the environment. This innovative tool makes it possible to detect the insects in places where traditional methods would be nearly impossible, greatly enhancing field research efforts.
With a One Health approach, integrating human, animal, and environmental health, the project aims to deepen our understanding of the eco-epidemiology of T. cruzi, providing valuable insights to design more effective and sustainable prevention strategies.
